Something Unexpected
Two red lines. It’s positive!...and our lives completely changed.
Jumping for joy, shouting in excitement -- that’s what we usually see in the movies when married couple learns that they are having a baby. But that’s way too far from what I felt when I saw those two red lines in the pregnancy test kit. I felt cold and scared. I couldn’t believe it and I hoped that it wasn’t real.
Worries
Why did I feel that way? It’s not that I’m too young to be a mother or I got pregnant out of wedlock. I felt that way because I was not prepared. We were not prepared. Having a baby was not part of our plan. We have a different plan in mind, a different path to take, and certainly it was not the road to parenthood.
My mind was flooded with questions: Am I ready for motherhood? Am I capable to be a mom? Can we give our child her needs? How about our plans for the future? How about our finances? Can I still have a career? Can I be a working mom?
Facing the Reality
My husband and I realized that wasting our time trying to answer those questions will lead us nowhere. Overly thinking of what’s going to happen in the future won’t help at all. So, like mature persons that we should be, we faced the reality. We are going to be parents. Motherhood, here I come!
Having a baby is never a bad thing, after all. Besides, we should feel blessed because “children are an inheritance from Jehovah God” (Ps. 127:3). They are gifts that parents should nurture and love. And that’s exactly how we feel right from the moment that we heard her heartbeat for the first time -- unconditional love.

So, were we prepared? Of course not! No one will ever be prepared for parenthood, I guess. No matter how many pregnancy and baby books you read, how many videos on child-care you watched, every single day with a newborn baby will always come with a surprise. How about our future plans? Well, change plans. In life, not all things go as planned. That’s the reality. So, we should be ready to adjust and make new plans based on our current situation. How about career? Can I be a working mom? Yes, I can!.
